Responsible Gambling: Recognising Harm and Getting Help
Gambling can become harmful. That is not a moralising statement — it is a description of a well-documented pattern of behaviour that affects several hundred thousand adults in the United Kingdom at any given time. This page covers the signs of harmful gambling, the tools that help you stay in control, and the free UK services that exist for anyone who needs them.
Signs that gambling may be causing harm
Any of the following, especially in combination, are worth taking seriously:
- Spending more than you can comfortably afford, or gambling with money set aside for something else.
- Chasing losses with larger stakes in the hope of recovering them.
- Feeling irritable, restless, or low when not gambling.
- Concealing the amount or frequency of gambling from family or friends.
- Neglecting work, relationships, or personal responsibilities to gamble.
- Borrowing money to gamble, or gambling with borrowed money.
- Feeling relief only when gambling, and anxiety at other times.
None of these on their own means you have a gambling problem. The pattern together suggests it is worth talking to someone.
Practical control tools
Self-imposed limits work better when they are external. Options include:
- Bank gambling blocks. Free with most UK banks (Monzo, Starling, HSBC, Barclays, Lloyds, NatWest). Blocks card transactions to gambling merchants.
- Deposit limits. Every UKGC-licensed operator must offer daily, weekly and monthly deposit limits in your account settings.
- Time-out periods. Short account breaks (typically 24 hours to six weeks) available at every UKGC-licensed operator.
- GamStop. The UK's national self-exclusion scheme. Free registration; blocks all UKGC-licensed operators for six months, one year, or five years. Detailed explainer on our GamStop page.
- BetBlocker and Gamban. Device-level blocking tools that filter out gambling sites at the browser or app level.

Non-GamStop casinos and self-exclusion
If you have self-excluded via GamStop, please do not use offshore sites to work around the block. GamStop does not reach offshore casinos technically, but the reason you self-excluded has not changed. The 24-hour cooling-off period at the end of a GamStop term exists because urges and decisions are not the same thing. Please call 0808 8020 133.
